We stayed at the Apollo which was an easy walk into town.
We stayed at the Apollo which was an easy walk into town. Buses to areas out of the city seemed pretty regular. Wellington is a pretty switched on city, with a creative energy and plenty of things to enjoy. Cuba St which is pedestrians only has plenty of cafes and restaurants and the food is top notch. Our favourites for dinner were Loretta’s, Olive, Mr Go’s. Icecream and Creaming sodas at Duck Island, coffees at Pickle and Pie, Cheese Scones beautiful pastries and coffee at Myrtle’s. Some good clothing shops, also recycling shops where there was really good clothing for sale at low prices, good bookstores. A must visit is Te Papa Museum - Level 4 Māori and Pacific Island history is impressive. The museum’s shop is also worth checking out. The lobby of QT Hotel (there’s a golden hippo on the hotel’s exterior) - you don’t need to be a guest to wander in to view the lobby area which includes a magnificent private art collection and a ritzy bar. Plenty of bars with music and Sunday Farmers Market on the waterfront was bustling with plenty of fruit and vegetables along with brunch food and coffee available.

Bus rides and train rides are awesome, just get yourself a Snapper card and more than one person can travel with that one card. Only one person can travel on that card on trains. Travelling in bus was also good, no hassle to driving or parking, bus service are almost everywhere till late nights and safe environments.

We thought Wellington was a beautiful City.
We thought Wellington was a beautiful City. We were there in late March. The weather was lovely and cool, just the right temperature if you like to explore a new location on foot. The bus system in the City is brilliant. The Metlink public transport card system can be a little intimidating but once you master it, it works exceptionally well. Otherwise, you can pay cash when travelling on the buses or trains, but it is quite significantly more expensive to pay this way. Also, it pays to check out the fare before you travel and have the correct money when getting on because nearly everyone uses the prepaid Metlink card so the driver has limited change. The seafood in New Zealand is the best in the world in my opinion. If you are staying centrally and have cooking facilities, I would recommend the Seafood Market in Lambton Quay or Cuba Street. It is not a huge shop but the fish comes in daily. Their fish and chips are pretty good as well. But there are plenty of seafood restaurants around that serve great food. Wellington is a a gorgeous city and reminded me very much of San Francisco.

Visited Te Papa Museum, Wellington Museum, Botanic Gardens...
Visited Te Papa Museum, Wellington Museum, Botanic Gardens and Portrait Gallery, all free access and excellent. Also took Cable Car (as you do) but the walk to and from Botanic Gardens is relatively easy as well. Went to Te Papa Museum and spent the entire day there - excellent. Ate at the Crab Shack and had the best meal in our entire NZ 2 week holiday - unfortunately, it was closed for 2 out of the 3 days we were in Wellington or we would have been back.
Location was brilliant. We were going to Kinky boots at St James and its right next door. Airport bus almost stops right outside door to as do buses for zoo. Irish pub Jack Hackett is on opposite corner and has great food and entertainment. Easy walking distance to everything in Wellington city. Reception staff are very friendly and helpful. Comfy bed, good shower pressure. Small window but nice enough view over to bay.
We arrived after hours but the reception team had all of our things ready and waiting. The room was an exceptional value -- spacious, well located, clean and comfortable. I was even able to use the gym for a quick workout in the morning. The reception team were absolute gems again when we checked out, they held our bags while we explored around the city. Will absolutely stay here again the next time we're in Wellington!
This was a great hotel for a short business trip to the city. I was able to walk everywhere. It was clean, and I especially liked the kitchenette in the room; that was a pleasant surprised. I also liked how all toiletries, including laundry detergent, was provided by the hotel. Check in and check out was a breeze. I also appreciated the turn-down service with nightly teas. Oh, and it was quiet; no noise.
Was quiet but did stay Sunday & Monday nights. Very comfortable bed. Nice clean room. Extra tea / coffee etc. items required no problem for staff to supply. Great location to central city shopping and food outlets. Grateful to Manager for compensating me with free breakfast for an issue which inconvenienced me which was NOT the Hotels fault plus a TV cable fault, much appreciated 👍
The room was spacious, the bed was very roomy and comfortable. We had hired our rental car from the airport so the location was great. We were able to leave our carry on luggage for storage, while we went into Wellington. We enjoyed a drink at the bar. we decided to have brunch in the city.
This is the second time we have stayed at this Rydges Hotel. :-)
location was fantastic, right next to sky stadium where we were traveling for a sporting event and also the main train station. an easy walk from wellington city center as well.
the facilities were great and the rooms were very clean and modern. two adjoining apartments were a great option for a family. the staff was extremely helpful, too.
Hotel location is ideal as central to most Wellington locations of interest and activities, with easy access to Lambton Quay and then walking distance throughout the CBD. Room was fresh, clean and roomy for 3, ie myself, my husband and adult son, plus quiet (except for the usual idiots that yell in the hallway enroute to the lifts!!!)
We were in Wellington to mountain bike and required safe storage for our bikes, the staff allowed us to take our bikes up to the room providing they were clean. This was amazing.
It would be great if the hotel had a lock up storage cage or room available for storage of bikes as the popularity of biking in the city grows.
Well-equipped. Located near the harbourfront, in the citycenter, next to the Willis Street, it was a great location. Elevator available via the garage to access the street or hotel to avoid the stairs. With the Airport Express Bus, you are from/to the Wellington Airport within 20 to 30 minutes.
Location was perfect right in city amongst restaurants. Staff amazing. Very clean. Bar and restaurant in hotel was awesome with great vibes, awesome cocktails and we loved the food. Great menu!!! Staff so helpful cheerful and friendly.
This was our first time staying at the Sofitel Wellington and we will definitely be back. Though the Hotel isn't the closet to the city centre, everything else made up for this. The staff, room, food and facilities were all excellent.
We were in Wellington over the weekend of the Covid level was raised. The hotel is centrally located and the room was great and the staff were helpful and friendly. Thanks to the Bar man and his knowledge of the cocktails served.
I was in Wellington for a conference and this hotel was centrally located and close to both the conference venue and the CBD. The room had all the facilities I could have wanted. The breakfast was great.
A great city based hotel. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Would definitely stay at this motel the next occasion I am visiting Wellington. Extra bonus of the underground carpark. Highly recommended!
Mecure Wellington Central City Hotel and Apartments was in a great location right in the middle of town easy to get to St James Theatre and Starbucks :-)
