For travelers heading to Ephesus, Izmir is worth at least a day or two on its own. The seafront promenade is lined with good fish restaurants and the bazar has many shops selling locally-made items, including new and historic hand-woven rugs from all over Turkey. The Agora ruins are worth a visit to get an idea of what the ancient city was like. There are also several significant museums in the city. If you love history, great food and friendly people visit izmir. I'm happy we included izmir in our trip to Turkey. Knowing what I know now of izmir and the area, I will stay longer next trip to take in more of the sites and culture.
