Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.
The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.
Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.
In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.
Booking.com’s range of Chester accommodation includes hotels with swimming pools, guest houses by the train station and B&Bs with parking near Chester Airport.

We stayed within the ancient walls. A three night stay was just right.
The city of Chester is very much larger. The walled city is great for walking as long as one can negotiate all the steep stairways. Lots of places to eat but if you are self-catering the shopping precinct could meet all your needs.

There is lots to see and do and we found the Hop on Hop off bus extremely useful for getting around and seeing so much and giving us directions of where we wanted to go when walking. There are lots of bars, some a bit noisy for us but everyone was welcoming and my friend and I felt safe walking around. Also lots of different places to eat from known restaurants and individual cafes and bistros. Something to suit all tastes and pockets.
Would definitely return.

The hotel staff are very friendly & kind.Good location near the train station and near to Chester city centre, very clean and the fact that they could have charged so much more the hotel but charged a very reasonable price instead esp for Chester, is every credit to the hotel.I will certainly recommend this hotel to anyone and will be going back again at somepoint. You probably will have to book quite early for this hotel as I can imagine it's really popular.
Situated across the road from Chester train station, this historic hotel was absolutely fantastic. 10 mins walk from Chester city centre and close to amenities, it was perfect for us. On site restaurant, bar and quick meal areas were very welcome. Our room was so large and comfortable. Art pieces everywhere :D Staff were amazing, paid car parking nearby and definitely woulds stay again.
